Arguing with AI: Climate Evidence Debate

Grade Level: 6–8 Subject: Science / ELA crossover Language: English AI Tool Used: Claude or ChatGPT Duration: 60 minutes (or two 30-min sessions) Contributor: Emerging Rule Team


Objective

Students will evaluate AI-generated arguments about climate science, distinguish between evidence-based claims and unsupported opinions, and practice constructing their own evidence-backed responses.


Standards Alignment

  • NGSS MS-ESS3-5 — Ask questions to clarify evidence of factors that cause climate change
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RST.6-8.8 — Distinguish between evidence-based vs. non-evidence-based claims

Materials

  • Device with AI chatbot access (1 per pair)
  • "Claim Tracker" graphic organizer (template below)
  • Access to a trusted reference: NASA Climate Kids, NOAA, or IPCC summary

Lesson Plan

Warm-Up (10 min)

Pose this question: "If you asked an AI whether climate change is real, do you think it would always give you accurate information? Why or why not?"

Brief pair-share, then discuss as a class.

Main Activity (40 min)

Part 1 — Interview the AI (15 min)

Pairs ask the AI two rounds of questions:

Round 1 prompt: "Explain three pieces of scientific evidence that support the conclusion that Earth's climate is warming due to human activity."

Round 2 prompt: "Now give me the strongest argument someone who doubts climate science might make, and then explain what scientists say in response."

Students fill in their Claim Tracker as they read.

Claim Tracker:

Claim Evidence given? (Y/N) Source mentioned? I agree / disagree / unsure

Part 2 — Fact-Check One Claim (15 min)

Each pair picks ONE claim from the AI and looks it up using NASA, NOAA, or another teacher-approved source. Does the real source support what the AI said?

Part 3 — Push Back on the AI (10 min)

Sample prompt: "You said [claim]. But I found that [what you discovered]. Can you correct or clarify your answer?"

Observe how the AI responds. Does it update? Does it get defensive? Does it add new information?

Wrap-Up / Discussion (10 min)

  • What did the AI get right? What was missing or vague?
  • What makes a scientific claim trustworthy?
  • Should students use AI for science research? What rules would you set?

Assessment

Exit ticket (3 sentences):

  1. One AI claim that was well-supported by evidence
  2. One AI claim that needed more support or was unclear
  3. One rule you'd give a younger student about using AI for science

Differentiation

  • Support: Pre-fill the Claim Tracker with the AI's claims; students only evaluate
  • Extension: Students write a 1-page "AI Audit Report" grading the AI's scientific accuracy
  • ELL: Run Part 1 prompt in Spanish; compare whether the AI's Spanish response differs from the English one

Notes from the Classroom

Students are often surprised when the AI hedges or says "scientists disagree" on questions where there is actually strong consensus. That moment — "wait, why is the AI being wishy-washy about this?" — is a rich entry point into discussing scientific consensus vs. public debate.
