Collaborate on a Game Jam with RIT Game Development Club (RGDC) #106

Description

@justwheel

Summary

Collaborate on integrating open source into a RIT Game Development Club (RGDC) game jam in Spring 2020 semester

Background

At our end-of-semester debriefing, we shared feedback from folks on wanting to see more collaboration with gaming orgs at RIT. @whenbellstoll is involved with RGDC, and we decided this would be one of his efforts alongside LibreCorps next semester.

Before jumping in headfirst to hosting a game jam, we want to do a couple of promotional events and talks at a few clubs at RIT to help build awareness for a FOSS game jam. This semester is an experiment – we haven't tried this before and we don't know how it will go. If it's successful, we can turn this into a recurring event. If it isn't, that's okay – at least we tried.

Details

We discussed a few steps of what this will look like across Spring 2020:

  • @whenbellstoll: "FOSS and Gaming" presentation for RGDC
  • @Devinaut: "Linux + games" presentation for @RITlug if he is willing (cc: @Tjzabel @jrtechs)
  • Define open source judgment criteria / guidelines for a FOSS game jam
  • Brainstorm open source honorifics for game jam prizes

Potentially we could tap the shoulders of some alum friends to see if they can throw us a bone on some free company swag or giveaways.

Outcome

Increasing the reach of FOSS@MAGIC's mission by collaborating with more student organizations at RIT
